The Worlds 2026 Swiss Stage opened on October 23 with a result nobody had seen before: all four LPL teams lost their first match. Gen.G, Hanwha Life Esports, Dplus KIA and T1 won, giving the LCK a perfect 4-0 start in a round of eight best-of-one games. As GosuGamers put it, no LPL team had ever gone winless in the opening round of a Worlds Swiss Stage before. That is not a bad day. It is a red flag.
Two of the four Chinese defeats came against LCK teams, and two came against Europe. Gen.G beat Invictus Gaming after IG had held a slight edge early, according to Hotspawn. Hanwha Life Esports had a far easier time against Top Esports, with Zeka on Locke the standout in a one-sided win. Bilibili Gaming and Anyone's Legend also fell, to Movistar KOI and Karmine Corp, with the latter's jungle and support pairing doing much of the damage. Taken together, these are not one-off upsets. They point to a region that looked uneven across the board.
The LCK's dominance deserves credit, but it should not be read as a simple story of one region being strong. T1 closed out LØS in around 24 minutes behind Doran's Jayce and Oner's Lee Sin, and Dplus KIA had to grind past G2 Esports, where SkewMond's Jarvan IV gave the LEC's top seed a strong early game. Europe's record was also mixed: the LEC finished with two wins from three, and G2 was the only European side to lose. The results show competitive pressure everywhere, and the LPL's problem is that it could not answer it.
What should happen next is simple. The LPL teams need to treat Round 2 as a survival exercise rather than a chance to reset their image. Round 2 is the final best-of-one round, and the LPL sides need wins to avoid sliding to 0-2. Organisers and teams should also look hard at why four teams from one region failed to win a single opener, because a repeat in later rounds would make the story far harder to dismiss.
The next round offers a clear test. With two all-LCK pairings in the 1-0 bracket, Korea is guaranteed at least two teams on 2-0. If the LPL cannot respond, the winless opener will stop looking like a bad start and start looking like a verdict.
